Description
Buffalo Soldiers originally were members of the 10th Cavalry Regiment of the United States Army, formed on September 21, 1866, at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. This nickname was given to the Black Cavalry by Native American tribes who fought in the Indian Wars.
Black soldiers enlisted for five years and received $13.00 a month, far more than they could have earned in civilian life.
One of the most famous of the Buffalo Soldiers was Lieutenant Henry O. Flipper. He was West Point's first black graduate and America's first black officer, and he became the first black hero in the ranks of the black regiments.
